Deakins book inspired my wife to take up swimming again. She used to be a lifeguard in summer, and taught swimming, but hadn't done much swimming in years. Roger Deakins book started it all up again. Great book. His others are as well! Thanks for the nice video.

Enjoyed the video. Inspired me to litter pick this morning on our very similar path on my morning dog walk. I litter pick regularly anyway. Our Council run TU2CU ( Team Up To Clean Up) a successful volunteer led LP scheme. Also if you have heard of Paws on Plastic- encouraging dog owners to LP when on their daily dog walks. Great work Alastair. I feel your pain re brambles.

I love the idea of the "full moon forays"!! I use Google Calendar to schedule all of my work and on-call commitments and therefore, also holiday periods but I hadn't thought of using it as the impetus to kick me over the doorstep into the great outdoors. Thanks Alistair. :)

Ahhh…the calendar advice. Agreed. Totally. And I do try, I promise I do. But when I look back through that calendar, oh so many gaps and then I have to ask myself, so what did I do during all those gaps? Best not to dwell on that! Though I do know the extended lunch break today was spent watching a guy on you tube banging on about…..🤔….oh well, moving swiftly on! 🤣

Agree with you. I'd go further and say I consider picking up litter to be a revolutionary act. I don't even tut if some litter is back in that same patch the next week. Whatever. Pick it up. One crisp packet at a time. I secretly also like picking it up in front of the car I suspect has dropped it and putting it in my bin bag totally nonchantly and non-confrontationally. Revolutionary stuff.

@@al_humphreys It's almost a more powerful act to visibly, quietly pick it up in their eyeline. The problem with reacting is it makes your objection seem more about them as an individual. I'm honestly more fussed about the insidiousness of the object and disposable culture than the "thrower" themselves - who I have come to pity as unfortunate to have become disconnected from nature and community.

I am just halfway through your book ("MOODS OF FUTURE JOYS") when I realized that I had no idea how old you are and if you're still among us on this planet :-D I decided to look you up and had a small glimpse of hope to see an interview of sorts with you, to know your voice. I like to read books with my inner voice sounding like the authors actual voice. I was delighted to see that only 19 hours ago you most recently uploaded a video. This video - which I will enjoy during lunch break now. Fantastic book by the way, I can hardly put it away.

Great ramble! But beware of dropping organic litter too. Only take photos (or about to go viral videos) and leave footprints whilst out and about. My personal dislike is the ubiquitous orange peel by paths. Not a fruit indigenous to the the UK - as yet - but with climate change fast advancing who knows for the future!!

Totally agree. But at least we can take action, and make a difference to the area/world you live in. And maybe someone who drops litter will see you picking it up and decide to join you, or at least think twice next time they buy roast king prawn flavour crisps(ewww btw) and decide this time to bin them! 😊👍🏼

Good ramble! Even organic waste is not acceptable as one should take nothing but photographs (or soon to go viral videos) and leave nothing but footprints on walks. My personal dislike is the ubiquitous orange peel I find by paths which although a healthier food choice is still not natural to our environment here in the not so sunny UK - though with climate change fast advancing - who knows....

I love this, I'm surrounded by waterways and constantly told by the locals that the water is 'massively polluted' and 'toxic' because of the historic industry that surrounds this town, it certainly doesn't always look that inviting, but it never occurred to me to actually test it myself!? 😃 i still wouldn't drink it though 😆

Fabulous insightful, funny and informative book. I finished reading this earlier this week, after a recommendation from a friend. It coincided with a family move to a new area, so one of the first things I did was order a 1:25000 map with our house in the centre and have been starting to explore. Not a grid at a time yet, but just connecting with the area. thoroughly recommend it myself and am about to have my first micro-adventrue next week 😀

Nice concept and exercise. Cymraeg ydy'r iaith @7:35 (Welsh is the language @07:35), it seems a bit distorted by ChatGPT - but possibly says "Of course, I could write the results". Although, I'd be wary of just testing pH, temp, phosphate and nitrates to decide whether a watercourse is drinkable in all places. Doesn't consider organic pollutants (herbicide, insecticides) and faecal bacteria. I appreciate there is also a judgement (e.g. I'll sometimes drink from upland streams) and what might be perfectly fine for swimming may not be so good for drinking. I'm also curious about that open pipe at @8:40 - it may just be a decommissioned 'pipe bridge' over the watercourse but I wonder if it is there for a pump connection for water abstraction/agricultural irrigation (this is speculation - I've no idea). As a canoeist I also see so much 'infrastructure' that has just been left to decay rather than responsibly removed. I do love your curiosity and approach with local exploration. There's so much we don't see/aren't aware of that's hidden behind unnecessary fences. Fideo neis, diolch yn fawr (Nice video, thanks very much).

Awesome. My neck of the woods is populated by cattle grazing on grassland. Beautiful and woodsy too, but the cattle bring wee beasties that can give you the screaming s...s, unfortunately. So it's water from home when I go out. Cattle are also conveyors of ticks, and their own contribution to potential misery. So, for me, my countryside adventures are on gravel roads on a bicycle. Another way for me to get away from the city, and be surrounded by nature. Thanks for your video. I embrace the micro adventure ethic as well, thanks to your mountain bikes and bothy nights video!
